Paul VanDeCarr

NGO writer, editor, trainer

LET’s get to the human heart of your work

No matter what your organization wants to communicate, I'll help you do it better. That might mean:

  • Creating a communications strategy.

  • Coaching you in public speaking.

  • Writing or editing anything from punchy marketing copy to long reports.

  • Training your team how to write great stories, clear prose or winning grant proposals.

  • Facilitating staff or conference sessions on shared purpose.

Drop me a line, let's talk.

What can I do for you?

The purpose of NGO communications is to bring people together into a stronger movement for peace and justice. No matter what your organization does, communications is—or should be—an essential part of it.

I’m an NGO communications expert with 20 years’ experience in the fields of media, the arts, racial justice, and international development, and I hold master’s degrees from the Harvard Kennedy School and Harvard Divinity School.

Here’s some of what I can do for and with you.

Writing and Editing

We’ll get to the heart of your work, and that means you’ll build more support and create more change. Read some of my reports, web stories, strategy guides, and more. Clients have included the United Nations, UNDP, UNFPA, UNICEF, Active Voice Lab, Philanthropy New York, and others.

Training and Coaching

In person or online, in groups or one-on-one, I offer customized communications training to bring out the best in your team. Check out the menu of communications workshops I offer, from storytelling to public speaking to proposal-writing and more. I’ve worked with United Nations staff from around the world, and I wrote a guide on “Storytelling and Social Change.”

Strategy and Research

I work with foundations and NGOs to create action plans for maximum impact. Clients have included Echoing Green, the Ford Foundation, and the Stupski Foundation. I researched and wrote grantmaker strategy guides for GrantCraft and Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors (see the “Writing” page). I was a researcher for the renowned playwright and actor Anna Deavere Smith.

Here’s what my clients and colleagues from around the world have to say about me, in recommendations on my LinkedIn profile.

Creative Work

I’ve worked in documentary film, radio, theater, and oral history. I still do my own creative work, which shapes how I think about NGO communications.
